Older Adult Therapy & Geropsychology

As individuals age, their concerns change. With healthy aging comes changes in the body, physical functioning, and relationships. In a time of struggle, it is important to speak with someone who understands the aging process. We will take time to get to know and understand the context, history, and current functioning to develop a plan together to address the internal and external challenges that are arising.

Age-related medical changes and physical health are often a source of stress. We will collaborate with other medical professionals to enhance continuity of care. We understand generational values, habits, and attitudes that are unique to older adults, and strive to help each individual live a fulfilling life. When seeing a geropsychologist, one can expect to experience an overall increase in quality of life through a decrease in physical and emotional distress, improved connection to valued behavior, and improvement in communication and social support.

Specialized individual evidence-based treatments are offered for older adults dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss/bereavement, adjustment difficulties/retirement, caregiver stress, medical and health complications, insomnia, and death and dying.

If there is community interest, we can offer therapy group presentations on the following topics: aging, grief/loss, stress management, loneliness, caregiver stress, retirement, managing medical comorbidities and mental health, emotion regulation (DBT-light skills group), skills for better sleep, self-compassion, mindfulness, anxiety/trauma process groups, combating depression, and Veteran-specific groups. Please email Dr. Eliza Polli at epolli@hanovercbt.com if you are interested in community-based groups or presentations for older adults.
